Welcome to Agribella.com
Agribella.com guides you through the wonderful world of Italian Agriturismi. Agriturismo means agricultural tourism that offers you a cultural and romantic stay in the fields of Italy.
What is Agriturismo ?
An agriturismo in Italy is similar in some respects to a Bed and Breakfast around the world. The word agriturismo is a combination of the words in Italian for agriculture and tourism.
Essentially, it is a farm that has accommodations for guests. While there are some agriturismi that are a down and dirty farm, many agriturismi have many of the amenities you would expect from an expensive hotel including fine linens, swimming pools and excellent service.
An agriturismo is usually situated in the countryside, owing to it’s connection with the farm, and some make it a point to include their guests in some of the activities that are part of a functioning farm.
A visit to a typical small agriturismo will include huge lunches and dinners made by the mother or grandmother with vegetables, fruits and meats directly from their farm. The freshness of the produce and meat and the obvious care that the contadino (farmer) has taken with the food and preparation really show through in the taste of the meals.
Typically, the meal will be served with wine that is made with grapes grown on the agriturismo and vin santo (a sweet wine, similar to sherry), limoncello (a lemon liqueur) or grappa (a distilled spirit made from the grapes) – all grown on the property.
Staying at a agriturismo is a great way to see the “real” italy – being able to connect with Italians in their everyday life and not feel like such a tourist.
Having your own transportation is important, as you are in the countryside where public transportation is not readily available. If you don’t have a car, then look for locations that are serviced by public transportation or where proprietors are willing to pick you up at the train station.
