Tenuta San Michele - Sicily
The Tenuta San Michele, situated at the base of Etna Volcano, consists of 75 acres of vineyards from which the prestigious Murgo wines derives. The combination of mild climate, altitude and terrain offer optimum conditions for this production of ten prestigious blends. Besides reds (Etna Rosso has won many awards) and whites, the line includes spumanti sparkling wines and aquavit. A 200-year-old cellar with reserve barrels sits next to the new one incorporating the latest in modern technology. Within this large wine estate are two houses that offer guest accommodation as eight bedrooms and two apartments. Posed on the top of a hill, views take in looming Etna, over to Taormina and the sea. Rooms are simply appointed without much fanfare, new in feeling, and have the amenities of a hotel. A pool is a welcoming asset after a day of hiking up Etna or touring the vast archaeological site at Piazza Armenina: the Roman Villa Casale with its magnificently preserved mosaics floors. At the restaurant of the Tenuta, where locals flock on weekends, typical recipes of the Etna region are served using ingredients directly from the family’s properties, including olive oil, honey, jams, patés, fruits and citrus. This is an authentic taste of Sicily. |
