Fattoria Castellina - Tuscany

Fattoria Castellina is a farm situated on the hills between Florence and Vinci, in Tuscany with 110 hectares of land, including 10 ha of vineyard, 30 ha of olive grove. The remainder is woods that surround the property.
In our red wines we endeavor to express our terroir of Chianti Montalbano to its full potential by
practising organic farming and paying a lot of attention to the respect of our beautiful landscape, vegetation and animal life. The olive grove has been run organically for over 8 years and since the last two we have been farming biodynamically in the vineyard as well. Since 1996 we have been gradually renovating the vines and in 2000 we have restored an old terraced vineyard that was left uncultivated for 20 years. Here we have replanted Sangiovese with a head training system and “settonce” planting scheme, widespread in ancient Greece. High plant density (8,300 plants/ha) means that work is done entirely by hand and animal-towed tools.

Since 2004 we have set out on a path inspired by the antroposophical principles of Rudolf Steinerand we have been practising biodynamic agriculture . This path is very gratifying in terms of results on grapes and wine; but more than anything, it has given a new and authentic significance to the work we are doing as well as a really sustainable future to agriculture.

Modern biodynamics represents today the most advanced model of applied sustainable agriculture, as well as the most effective means of achieving truly uncompromising wine quality while maintaining the fullest respect for both man and nature. For viticulture, it is the soundest method for restoring to wine its typicity and its sensory relation to its terroir. The resulting wines are immediately recognised as alive and natural, ones which chemical analysis shows to possess higher values than those produced by conventional means. It goes without saying that, from the point of view of communications, these are “Wines with a premise.” The real question is how is it that, after more than a century from its birth, biodynamics has not yet achieved the widespread attention it deserves.
