I can see them sitting there on the grass
I was born with love, like all the things conceived by my parents. It is to them that I dedicate this morning walk down the history of the Bagnolo.
To Antonia and Carlo, my parents.
Breathe, feel and admire. A hymn to beauty and to our desire to drink in the sense of well-being, to gather and chat around the fireside after hours of welcome quiet.
I remember my grandparents like this, sitting on the lawn admiring the whole lake from Punta S. Vigilio to Borghese Island where they met. It was back in the Twenties. My grandfather Mirtillo Gnes (Nico) was a district veterinarian serving a vast area from Manerba to Gargnano. He was cultured, romantic and exceptionally handsome. He was loved by rich and poor alike, caring for the aristocratic greyhounds of Gabriele D'Annunzio and the humble cows of the local farmers, close to people of all social backgrounds. Perhaps this is why my grandfather had that most precious virtue: respect for the dignity of each individual.
My grandmother Elisabeth was German and she was there, at the Grand Hotel of Gardone Riviera, at one of those splendid parties in which the Mittleuropean upper classes whiled away the winters in warmer climes, where they let themselves be pampered by the refined Italian hospitality. He was there, too, in his white evening dress, and like in a fairy story, he asked her to dance. And he never let her go again.
Both loved this place, high up on a pass.

And on this table you will always find only what nature has decided to provide us with.
