Sunflowers alternate with wheat and oats in the rolling acres that surround the farm. Tomatoes dry in wicker baskets in the sun, others are bottled with basil; there are chestnuts and honey and vegetables in abundance - all organic. The Zampaglione family have farmed here for generations; wholly committed to ecological principles, they are proud to show guests around the place - and delighted if you help out in the vegetable garden! A white house standing four-square in the fields is the family home, but it is the old, single-storey farmhouse, and Grandfather's House, that have been made over to house guests. The old stable, with its huge fireplace, high rafters, excellent sofas and little library full of local information, serves as a general gathering place. Borrow a bike and set off for a nearby farm to buy fresh ricotta and pecorino, book in for a cookery course, bake bread in a wood oven. The family make organic pasta from their own flour, milled on the premises.
