The palazzo's courtyard walls drip with creepers and geraniums; in front, across a little road, is a verdant citrus grove worth resting in. This azienda agricola, dating from the 17th century, is devoted to the production of organic olive oil (massages available) and Anna's family turn out some of Puglia's finest. Through the massive gates the narrow and unremarkable streets of Spongano village are left behind and you enter, via a Moorish arched portico, a white-gravelled, white-walled courtyard dotted with elegant wrought-iron tables and chairs. Off the creeper-clad inner courtyard, ground-floor apartments have been carefully converted into a series of airy and beautifully furnished rooms. Walls are colourwashed warm yellow and soft blue, sleeping areas are separated by fabric screens, ceilings are lofty and stone vaulted. One apartment for two has a 'dining room' squeezed into an ancient fireplace, bathrooms have pretty mosaic mirrors and most of the kitchenettes are tiny. Marmellata and cakes for breakfast, a vast roof terrace, beaches a short drive.
